Extruder clicking and not extruding

The filament can’t extrude for some reason and the extruder drive is trying to push the filament through the hot end yet it’s not going through. This cases the clicking sound and we see the extruder thumb wheel skipping.

Common reasons are:

Wrong extruder temperature for the material. For example your printing with PETG which wanted a extruder temp of 260C and you’re set up for PLA and only 205C

If this is happening during a first layer move (prime/purge line or as extruding the first layer) it could be your nozzle is to low to the plate which is blocking the nozzle from extruding. Your z offset is wrong and should always be set be observation and baby steps and never the paper method.

The nozzle is clogged. Heat the nozzle to 270C for two minutes, then briefly try to extrude a bit of filament and let it completely cool to cold for 30 minutes and do a cold pull. Examine the pull to make sure it looks like it it pulled clean out of the nozzle (shape). Repeat.

Extruder very clogged. Heat to 280C and pushing the thumb latch at the top of the toolhead to the left use the acupuncture needle that came with your printed to clear through the filament path and out the nozzle. Pull the needle back out again and repeat then try a cold pull.

Extruder tension to low, adjust tension screw on right side of toolhead.
